behind the song

"I know now, Lord, why you utter no answer. You are yourself the answer. Before your face, questions die away. What other answer would suffice?"                                                                                                             (C.S. Lewis)

One of the greatest joys of my life is being a mom to two little blessings, Micah and Hannah. But I never want to forget the journey that brought us here.

About a year before Micah was born, after many unsuccessful months of trying to get pregnant, I remember crying in the bathroom, holding my stomach and praying to God that He would give us a baby. Really, truly, pleading with Him. A couple months and a diagnosis later, I was finally pregnant! And the moment I held my firstborn little boy, there was a purpose for all the pain. God was faithful. Even in my waiting, He knew just what I needed. And out of my gratitude for this precious gift of life, I wrote this song when Micah was just a few weeks old. My prayer is that this song will be an encouragement to others who are waiting, praying or pleading for something. Whatever it is, your prayers are not going unheard. Just wait... He knows what's coming soon.

lyrics

Just wait, You say
You know what's coming soon
But I get impatient and lose all faith
In waiting on You

Just pray, You say
You'll give the answer soon
But I ask again and again and again
When the answer is You

You are the faithful one
You are the faithful one
When my prayers go numb
 And the waiting comes
(2x)
You are faithful
The faithful one

 It's time, I know
To let go of all my fear
And trust that You're good
and Your plan is much better
Than what I hold dear

 It's now, I see
You're working it all for good
One day the pain and the tears and the worry
Will be understood

Even in my waiting
You know just what I need
Even in my doubt
You still have faith in me
Even when the words I pray
are bitter on my lips
You are even faithful to forgive

behind the song

This song is dedicated to my wonderful, loving and faithful husband. He is an example of Jesus to me in so many ways.

We’ve been through quite a few storms in our eight years of marriage so far. A few months before our engagement, my parents went through a painful divorce. Then two months after we were married, Josh’s younger brother, Jordan, passed away unexpectedly from a year long battle with cancer. We were in full-time ministry and the grieving process was not an easy one. Josh began to have health issues and went through several medical tests over the next year and a half. Sitting in my sister’s apartment on the eve of her wedding in 2010, I sat down and began to write the words to this song. In retrospect, I think I was contemplating on the fact that everyone goes into marriage knowing that it probably won’t be easy all of the time. But not a lot of people go into their marriage thinking it will be hard from the beginning. "For better or for worse, in sickness and in health…” Josh and I had to put our vows into practice right away. But there’s a simple line in this song that says, “Loving isn’t easy, but when it comes to you… there’s nothing that’s been easier to do.” If there’s one thing our marriage doesn’t lack, it’s love. Josh is truly my best friend. And while this may not appear to be a love song by the title, the truth is that I couldn’t have written a love song that was more honest, raw and descriptive of our marriage, than this.

lyrics

Ever since I was a child
 I prayed to grow up
To leave my little nest and learn to fly
I prayed I'd find a love
Someone that I could trust
To shelter me from storms in this life

When the winds blow
When the seas grow
When the fires come and burn it all away
You are faithful
And I'm grateful
That you never leave when it's hard to stay

Oh, you came into my life
Like a river meets the sea
The course was set for us so long ago
Now we're drifting side by side
Through the changing tide
Growing stronger as we fight the undertow

Oh, and loving isn't easy
But when it comes to you
There's nothing that's been easier to do

Ooh
Ooh

Sometimes I lay awake
In the middle of the night
And wonder how I ended up right here
Beside the man I love
The one that I can trust
To help me overcome my deepest fears

behind the song

This song was born out of an attempt at throwing around a few ideas for a corporate worship song. It quickly turned into a personal prayer to God, asking Him to show me how to love people like He loves them. I probably sat on this song for over a year, waiting for a chorus to hit me. But all I could think of were the words, “more of You, less of me.” Reminiscent of John’s prayer in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease," I realized the only way I could really love people like Jesus is to constantly seek to be filled with more of Him.

lyrics

Give me eyes to see the wounded and the weary
Give me hands to feed the homeless and the hungry
Give me feet to lead the ones who follow closely
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me

Give me patience for the beggar in the street
Give me kindness for the ones who speak against me
Give me joy for joy and tears for those who weep
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me

More of You
Less of me
(3x)
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me

Ooh, ooh

Give me water for the days when I run dry
When I'm too afraid give me faith to try
Fill me up, then pour me out across the sea
Show me how to love
Like You have loved me

You've loved me
You've loved me
Give me eyes to see the wounded and the weary

behind the song

To anyone who has ever struggled with feeling overwhelmed, anxious or just depressed in life. This song is for you.

I wrote this song through tears when I was completely broken down. I felt hopeless during the season my mom was going through chemotherapy to get rid of her cancer. We had just moved to a new town, I was 30+ weeks pregnant, and I felt like I had no one to turn to. I felt alone in my pain. And then, while writing this song, God reminded me that He is the ONLY thing that lasts after we die. All the pain we feel on earth is temporary, but His love… praise God, His love is everlasting.

      lyrics

It's not easy being broken
It's not easy feeling pain
Time won't mend the words unspoken
Time will let them slip away

You are hope
When the world is dimming around me
You are peace
When the storms come crashing
You are joy
When my sorrow seems unending
You are love everlasting
everlasting

Open wounds are hard to heal
Once a blister now a scar
Time won't take the pain away
Time will only play a part

You are my hope when all is lost
You are my peace when all is chaos
You are my joy
You are my love everlasting
(x4)
everlasting
everlasting

Oh, this world
This world won't last
You're the only hope
 The only hope I have
(2x)

thank you's:

Jesus, for saving me everyday. And giving me something to sing about. There is no greater privilege than to be able to tell others of the grace and mercy You have shown me! Everything I do is an outpouring of what You have already done in my life. "Thank you" really isn't enough!

Josh, for being a husband that loves Jesus more than me. I couldn't have prayed for someone more dedicated or passionate about the gospel than you! I am so grateful that God chose to put us together on this journey in life and make beautiful babies! ;)  Thanks for being my biggest encourager!

Micah + Hannah, for giving me just a tiny glimpse of what the love of the Father must feel like. Being your mom has opened the doors of my heart to a sacrificial type of love that I never really knew before. Your smiles make me smile. Thank you for singing along to every song on this album, even when you had to listen to them 100 times! Praying that your tiny souls will trust Jesus as Savior so that you will mean every word you sing!

Daddy, for teaching me to love and respect music. I have such fond memories of sitting in our music room and wearing out cassette tapes of all of your original songs. Thank you for being my biggest inspiration as a musician and believing in me enough to buy me a Taylor when I graduated high school! I'm pretty sure that made me look way better at guitar than I actually was. ;)

Mommy, for always cheering me on. I'm pretty sure you listened to every song I ever wrote in my room, even if it was awful, and still told me it had potential! Ha. Sometimes I wonder if your dreams for me were even bigger than my own. And when you could have easily brought me back down to reality and encouraged me on a more "practical" path in life - you never did. You let me be the "frequent flyer" that I am. ;) I love you so much for that!

Courtney, for being the best sister in the world! Your support, not only on this album but in life in general, has been such a blessing. I love that you and I share a passion and love for music, without there being a competitive spirit. You were the first person to hear every song on this album after it was finished, because I value and trust your opinion over almost anybody! Thanks for always taking time to give it. (Also, a HUGE thank you for capturing the awesome cover photo for this EP!)

My Robinson family, for loving me so well as your daughter-in-love. Your support and encouragement spiritually has been one of the biggest blessings in my life! Thank you for always spurring me on to keep writing music and words for the body of Christ. You are a shining example of the love of Jesus and I am so thankful to have you as family!

Rachel + Brittany, for being friends dedicated to seeing this project thru. Your support, both tangible and intangible, means more than you could ever know! If there were only two people in the world that I trust would buy my music - outside of family - it would be you two, hands down. So basically, this album is for you. ;) Love you both like sisters.

Eddy + Nick, for your creativity and vision in bringing these songs to life! I am so honored that the Lord brought us together to work on this project. It was definitely ordained by God. Every step of the process was enjoyable, even the squeaky piano pedal added character! ;) I am so grateful for your support and encouragement in this journey. THANK YOU!
